Air Fryer Eggs

Air fryer eggs are boiled eggs without the pan of water: set the temperature, start the timer and walk away. At 150°C, medium eggs take 8 minutes for a soft yolk, 10 for jammy and 12 for hard-boiled, followed by an ice bath that makes them easy to peel. It is a handy method when you want half a dozen eggs at once.

Timings and common mistakes with air fryer eggs

Eggs cook gently in the dry, circulating heat of the basket, and the result is very close to boiling. The three things that matter most are the temperature, the timer and the ice bath. Set the temperature to 150°C, use medium eggs from the fridge, and time them accurately. A minute either way changes the yolk from soft to set.

Air fryers vary, so cook one test batch of two eggs first to see how your machine behaves, then note the time that gives you the yolk you like. The basket should hold a single layer, so cook six eggs at a time at most, and leave a little space between them.

How to make air fryer eggs

Tap a time to start a timer.

  1. Preheat Heat the air fryer to 150°C for . Fill a bowl with cold water and plenty of ice cubes.
  2. Load the basket Lay the eggs in a single layer in the basket with a little space between them. No oil or water is needed.
  3. Cook Cook at 150°C for for a soft yolk (set white, runny yolk), for a jammy yolk or for a fully set yolk. For six large eggs, add a minute.
  4. Cool Lift the eggs straight into the ice bath with tongs and leave them for . This stops the cooking and helps the shells come away cleanly.
  5. Peel Tap each egg on the worktop, roll it gently to crack the shell all over, then peel it under a trickle of cold water.

Ways to use them

Halve jammy eggs on toast with a pinch of salt and pepper, add hard-boiled eggs to egg and cress sandwiches or a salad, or serve soft ones in egg cups with toast soldiers. Hard-boiled eggs are also the start of Scotch eggs, and if you would rather have them scrambled, try air fryer scrambled eggs.

Common problems and fixes for Air Fryer Eggs

The yolk has a grey-green ring.
The eggs were overcooked or left to cool slowly. Take them out on time and put them in ice water straight away.
The shells stick and tear the white.
Very fresh eggs are the hardest to peel. Use eggs that are about a week old if you can, and peel them under cold running water after the ice bath.
The eggs crack in the basket.
Do not overcrowd the basket, and put the eggs in with tongs or a spoon rather than dropping them in. Cook them straight from the fridge, as the heat is gentler.
