Air Fryer Ground Beef Patty

An air fryer ground beef patty cooks in about 10 minutes with less mess hob and very little washing up. Beef mince in the UK is sold by fat percentage, and 20% fat gives the juiciest result, because some fat drains away into the drawer. Season the mince, shape four 125g patties, cook them at 200°C in two batches and check they are cooked through. The whole job takes about 40 minutes.

What makes a good burger in the air fryer

Fat content matters more than any seasoning in an air fryer ground beef patty. Beef mince with 15–20% fat browns well, stays juicy and drains off the excess, while 5% fat mince can turn out dry in the dry heat of an air fryer. Use cold mince, handle it lightly and keep the patties the same thickness so they finish together. Garlic and onion powder season the meat evenly without wet bits that stop the surface browning.

Raw mince should go straight from the pack to the bowl, because water splashing in the sink spreads bacteria. Wash your hands and any surfaces it touches afterwards instead.

How to cook air fryer ground beef patty

Tap a time to start a timer.

  1. Season the mince Put the beef mince in a large bowl with the salt, pepper, garlic powder and onion powder. Mix gently with your hands for about 30 seconds, just until the seasoning is spread through. Over-mixing makes the patties dense and tough.
  2. Shape the patties Divide the mixture into four 125g portions. Roll each into a ball, then press into a disc about 2cm thick and 9cm across. Press a shallow dimple into the centre of each with your thumb so the patty stays flat and does not dome as it cooks.
  3. Preheat Preheat the air fryer to 200°C for . Brush the basket lightly with the olive oil. A standard 4–5.5-litre basket holds two patties without touching, so cook in two batches.
  4. Cook and flip Cook the first two patties for , flip them with a spatula or tongs, and cook for another . Cook the second batch the same way, adding an extra minute if the air fryer has cooled.
  5. Check they are cooked Each patty should be browned, with no pink inside and clear juices. A meat thermometer in the centre should read at least 75°C. Cook for more if needed.
  6. Rest and serve Leave the patties on a warm plate for , loosely covered with foil. Serve in toasted buns or with chips and salad.

Serving and topping

Toast the buns in the air fryer for 1–2 minutes at 180°C while the patties rest. A slice of Cheddar laid on top during the last minute of cooking melts in time. For a classic pub-style burger, pile the patty with caramelised onions as in beef patties with caramelised onions, or build it into a beef patty sandwich with lettuce, tomato and pickle.

Cooked patties keep in the fridge for up to 2 days. Reheat them in the air fryer at 160°C for 3–4 minutes until steaming hot all the way through.

Common problems and fixes for Air Fryer Ground Beef Patty

The patties shrink and bulge in the middle.
Press a thumb dimple into each one before cooking, and shape them a little wider than the bun because they shrink by about a quarter.
The burgers are dry and crumbly.
The mince was too lean or mixed too much. Choose 20% fat mince, mix only until combined and do not press the patties with a spatula as they cook. If you only have lean mince, add 1 tsp of olive oil per patty.
The outside is dark but the middle is still pink.
The patties were too thick or the air fryer was crowded. Keep them to 2cm thick, leave a gap between them, and cook for an extra 1–2 minutes until they reach 75°C.

Frequently asked questions about Air Fryer Ground Beef Patty

How long do you cook a beef patty in the air fryer?

About 10 minutes at 200°C for a 125g patty that is 2cm thick, flipped after 5 minutes. A thicker patty needs 2–3 minutes more, so always check that it reaches 75°C in the centre.

Can you cook frozen patties in the air fryer?

Yes. Cook frozen 125g burgers at 180°C for 12–15 minutes, flipping halfway, without thawing first. Make sure they are steaming hot all the way through with no pink before you eat them.

Do you need to oil the air fryer basket?

A light brush of oil stops the patties sticking, but you do not need to oil the patties themselves because 20% fat mince releases enough fat while cooking.

Can you make burger patties ahead?

Yes. Shape and chill the raw patties, covered, in the fridge for up to 24 hours, or freeze them with a piece of baking paper between each for up to 3 months. Defrost frozen patties in the fridge overnight before cooking.

How do I cook burgers in the oven instead?

Place them on a lined baking tray and cook at 200°C (180°C fan), gas 6, for 18–20 minutes, turning halfway, until there is no pink and the centre reaches 75°C.
